How We Started Our First-Generation Ranch: From City Life to 80 Acres
Intro
We didn’t grow up on a ranch. We didn’t have generations of cattlemen behind us or a blueprint waiting to be followed. We grew up in the city, living the kind of life most people would call “normal.”
But deep down, we knew we wanted something different — not just for ourselves, but for the family we hoped to raise someday. We didn’t want fast-paced living, distractions, or a life where we were always rushing from one thing to the next. We wanted purpose, connection, and space to breathe.
We wanted our kids to grow up learning hard work, respect for the land, and the value of slowing down long enough to hear the wind through the trees and recognize it as a gift — not background noise.
So we took a leap — one that didn’t make a lot of sense on paper — and we started looking for land.
The Search
Finding land wasn’t easy. There were days we felt close… and days we wondered if what we were dreaming was unrealistic or just flat-out crazy.
But we prayed. We stayed patient.
And we kept going.
Finally, we found it — 80 acres of raw Missouri woods with a pond tucked into the trees. Overgrown. Untouched. Wild.
Most people saw a mess.
We saw a beginning.
When we signed the papers, we didn’t just buy property — we stepped into a calling neither of us felt qualified for, but both of us felt undeniably drawn to.
The Decision That Changed Everything
There’s a moment where dreams stop being ideas…
and start becoming work.
That moment showed up fast.
We didn’t have experience. We didn’t have a family handbook or ranch mentors growing up. But we had faith, grit, and the willingness to learn by doing — even if we messed up along the way.
Looking back, that was enough.
It still is.
What We’ve Learned So Far
If there’s one thing this journey has taught us, it’s this:
You don’t have to be born into a path to walk it.
You just have to start.
This ranch hasn’t been quiet or easy or predictable.
It’s been humbling, loud, muddy, exhausting, rewarding, hilarious, expensive, and sacred — all at the same time.
And we wouldn’t trade any of it.
